We consider backlinks the way they should be considered. That is for the useful, pre-qualified traffic they could generate, and any SE benefit is a bonus.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds
Thought for today:- Is SEO the only industry where all the cowboys are Indians?
Lashtal there's plenty of info here and on the web in general about what might make for a better link for your site. I do think a lot of common sense will work here.
Often if you think about a link for its value outside of search engines the link tends to have value for search engines anyway.
For example looking at your signature it would make sense to have MySpace profiles linking to you. Since you offer code for MySpace it stands to reason that the MySpace community would be interested in your code. It's likely someone who sees your link there might click and assuming the code you're offering is useful they'll link to you as well.
Nothing in the above considered a search engine, but odds are if enough people on MySpace linked to you and recommended your layouts on their profiles search engines would see you highly relevant for a phrase like "MySpace Layouts."

I just wanted to add emphasis to that part of the quote.
Get backlinks for the traffic the backlink itself will generate. Don't do it for search engines. If you go after "non-search" traffic, the search traffic will come as a bonus.
Non search traffic is much more likely to be higher quality traffic, so your hosting/bandwidth expenses are not wasted on people who don't want to visit your site. Resulting search traffic will be better too.

Yup! Quality and targeted backlinks for potential targeted traffic. Traffic and conversion are also some direct benefits you get out of building links
The first two websites on google have backlinks 24600 and 44600. So if you want to get top in google for keyword mobile phone, you need to make more backlinks then 44600. It is really tough lol........
