A few dozen from highly authoritative pages with few outgoing links, or tens of millions of regular or easy to get ones.

Easily 8 out of 10 scale wise, 10 being the hardest. This would require a very massive link building effort. Good luck.

Seriously, the question itself is flawed on a number of levels:

1) It focuses on one keyphrase.

2) It focuses on ranking for one keyphrase.

3) It focuses on a generic phrase that does nothing to establish user intention.

4) The keyphrase in question references an oversaturated online marketplace full of get-rich-quick artists who only serve to waste time while barely earning enough to buy a glass of Kool-Aid (fortunately for most of these artists, there are more than enough "industry leading" scammers who are more than willing to supply slightly altered Kool-Aid for free).

5) Your signature contains three blogs on subdomains that could easily be merged into one bigger blog, therefore indicating that you're completely ignoring the other aspects of SEO (this is also known as VSpammin'N/Digital Pointless logic).

6) The question itself doesn't address quality of links, merely quantity.

In other words, you need to change your line of thinking radically.

plenty. specially if that site is well optimize. it will take hundreds / thousands of quality back links to kick them out in there position.
so better optimize your site and have quality contents on it.

Search engines will never grant rankings on the basis of back links alone. you need to have a balanced seo website if you really want to score higher rankings for competitive keywords.

Really? Apple's iPhone shows on the first page and it hasn't been around very long. At least a third of the front page results are blogs.

I had a glass awhile back and then I couldn't stop thinking about what the juice was telling me: "Get more links, Get more links, GET MORE LINKS!"

Do a search for the phrase 'click here' and check the #1 result. After you've looked over the page see if you still agree with your statement.

It's the square root of 337561, subtract 15 and then divide by 2. It's the only formula you need to know.

They're using dice, chicken blood, and a full moon. The larger point is that, like snow flakes, no two links are identical. How many links it will take to get to the top of the search results depends a lot more on the quality than the number of links. Steve said it would take 283, but that he can't say which ones in particular. From the home page of the BBC, Yahoo, Wordpress.org, and similar, it would probably take a lot less. From blog comments, several million at least.

Lashtal we're making up the numbers and the formulas. We're doing that because the original question can't be answered as written. There isn't a specific number of backlinks the site will need.

Mobile phones are a competitive market so it will likely take a lot, but we can't put an exact number on it. The quality of links varies. One page could have 1,000 low quality links and be outranked by another page with 10 high quality links. And again I'm making up these numbers.

Another reason why the question can't be answered is the situation is in flux. Say the #3 ranking page at the moment has 100,000 links. So we say you need 100.001 links. By the time those 100,001 links are acquired the original site has probably gotten quite a few more too so more would be needed.

We're all just trying to point out how the question can't be specifically answered by offering nonsense answers.
