To get backlinks submit to directories, submit your original articles with backlinks to your site and exchange links.

* You need to have good site contents, somethings that visitors will be interested in.
* Give a good title for the page.
* Build backlinks to your site (links from other sites to your site).
* Design your site, make it so that search engines can crawl all your pages easily.
* Meta Keywords, Meta description, URLs, .. will help but not very important.

link building is the best answer I think.. backlinks refer to the incoming links of your website..
the best way to do it is by:
directory submission
social bookmarking
forums (via sig)
commenting to other blogs
link exchange

2. Direct traffic

Here are some ways that would help:
Directory Submissions - targeted links at high PR directories
Blog and Forum participation - to high PR and frequently crawled sites
Social Bookmarking
Press Releases
Classified Ads
Article Marketing - submit to high PR directories, could also serve as link baits
Link Exchange - with relevant and authority sites
Link Baits - for organic linking
Etc. etc.

If you are link baiting and social networking/bookmarking, you are going to need something compelling to be effective.

Perhaps, the first thing to do is create a compelling reason for people to come to your site; Be it unique products, interesting content, useful tools, games, etc... After that, getting traffic is the easy part.

The most efficient way is to Social Media Market your website. Use all available SMM website to your advantage by participating in communities that help each other out. One of those is twitter if you don't know it. Twitter is VERY powerful for getting back links set by other. But in order to do that you must post links with serious content that are interesting.

There are many more SMM websites that can help you achieve backlinks & traffic. I will not get into this now as I think a new section could be in need for this. There is SO much to say about SMM that one post or thread just doesn't cover it!

It doesn't need one thread. It only needs two simple letters: BS.

The fad that is "social media marketing" will probably never truly die (nothing does on the Internet, especially when it's stupid and not based in any logic whatsoever), but it won't do what people think it will. Eventually all you end up doing is talking to other dirtbag greasy social media marketers with the exact same goal you have and that have no interest in spreading your message because they're too busy spreading theirs.

Ok man, your opinion is respected. But their is a huge industry based on SMM and this is how it is. So whether you like it or not, I am afraid that people will Socialize online and promote their sites using these techniques. SEO techniques change every so often and now that nofollow is being implemented by more and more websites out their, linkbuilding is getting harder and harder. So the next best thing is to get your site known and viewed as much as possible.

Right, and it's an industry that, even more than SEO, is based on a shaky foundation that most people cannot see. But I'll get to that.

Pyrmaid schemes are an industry too. So are online pharmaceuticals. So is gambling. Do we automatically give them credibility just because they're industries now? Is that how it works? I don't think any of us would agree on that.

Yeah, and who will they be reaching for the most part? Who are the people most likely to be active as time goes on?

Other social media marketers, who don't become "users" or customers. This is the foundation on which "social media optimization" is based....marketing to other marketers.

The people who experience the most success with "social media optimization" are the ones who just do what they're doing as far as content goes. This is the problem with the concept; "socialize, socialize, socialize." It's not the what that matters (the socializing), it's the how...and that's where most people will fall flat on their asses.

Completely incorrect on all counts. Real SEO techniques are things like building a site properly from a code standpoint, making sure that the key pages are easily reachable, and making sure content is optimized for users first, search engines second (if even necessary). None of this has really changed at all since the beginning; what has changed is the ways in which people try to shortcut the process and manipulate it without realizing that there's a much simpler way to do it.

SEO is the elements of good design coupled with the elements of smart marketing, and social bookmarking/media sites aren't smart marketing and won't prove to be. There's a way to "network" intelligently, and there's a way to fail miserably at it. Social media sites fail miserably at it.

He added them for the same reason that you're commenting on the industry; you're following prevailing thought. The thing with prevailing thought in the online marketing industry is that it's usually completely off base. People try to apply excessive amounts of math and science to what is, at its core, both art and science.
