It doesn't make sense to you because it's not supposed to make sense, and it never was.
There's a school of thought that suggests that, by advertising a competitor's website, you appear to be more open and honest with your users and they'll become customers...but it's at best a theory and, like you, I don't subscribe to it. It doesn't make sense; you don't invite people in the front door to your business and then give them a map to your closest competitor's place once they get in. It's silly, and always was.
You also don't want to exchange links. Good sites generate good, organic links. Bad ones result to shortcuts like link exchange. Link out when it's relevant to your user, not to some dope out in Awfulbania who thinks that inbound links are SEO because some sellout blackhat told everyone so. |
