I'm into my second week of having my website up and it is still unreleased. Today I had 176 unique hits and have no idea why.

Any thoughts?

There could be so many reasons. Hard to know without more details. Where did the traffic come from? How much traffic do you usually get? What are you using to track visits?

It could be robotic traffic that found you. It could be search engine spiders that found you. It could be real people visiting through one great link you added or page that is ranking well.

Lot's of potential reason.

Very true. I can rule out both both search engines because when they crawl my site I don't notice any large jump in unique users. The hits are also not being referred from anywhere. I'm not ranking high on any of the search engines either. I've used my hosts statistics for this information. I also usually get about 40 uniques a day. Mind you its only in its second week.

Also it isn't spam. People are playing games. (transfer is up where it should be, based on previous transfer)

Sometimes Social Media Sites can send spikes of traffic, do you have it's URL?

Maybe from direct visitors? yes, social media could boost a little traffic...
