Hi there! I just opened a fairly new blog, and all I did was tweak the meta tags, and sign up @ Technorati and post @ Digg.

I've been reading books about SEO but they all talk about SEO for websites.

Can anyone give me some insights on how to apply SEO on a blog ? I would like to increase my traffic

for the greatest part it's the same as for any other website imho;

few tips:

use Search Engine friendly URL's using the ModRewrite module in apache
Rewrite your URL's so, that the title is in front of the date
for example: http://www.seo-portal.com/buying-pr9...rg/2006/07/08/
and not
http://www.seo-portal.com/2006/07/08...inks-on-w3org/ (which is default in wordpress)

if you post news in a niche, make sure you get picked up by Google News (for my dutch science website www.wetenschap-nieuws.nl this brings in more traffic than the google search engine)

The ONLY SE traffic my blog gets is when they search terms like "a2 network" lol

get a higher PR

another tip is to use tags and place a tagging cloud on your blog..
I did it as a test on http://www.generex.nu/blog/ and all tags are seperately picked up by google!
like: http://www.generex.nu/blog/?tag=type+2+diabetes etc.

If you're using WordPress, these two articles would help you:

Also for wordpress, get Ultimate Tag Warrior: http://www.neato.co.nz/ultimate-tag-warrior/ UTW will make tag pages for you. Technorati sort of does, but you should get UTW no matter what.

Otherwise, do as SEO Portal says, use ModRewrite to make friendly URLs.

However, your PR will have very little to do with your search traffic. I have sites with PR0 that get hundreds of hits a day for various searches and I have pr4 and 5 sites that get very little search traffic.

The biggest thing is getting backlinks to your site with some keywords in the anchor text.

make up your titles carefully;
make sure the important keywords are in you post title...
