How many people do only SEO to promote their websites. Like, spending no money on advertising and just making websites as search engine optimized as possible and getting traffic only through search engines.

Is this possible? What methods are most effective if taking this approach?

link exchanging with popular related sites is the best way to get traffic. No money out.

is BlueHat SEO. Definetly worth a read, and will probably inspire some new project that is going to take up some of your valuable time.

I dont spend any money on advertising mainly because I'm not making much!

Best is to just follow the usual good-practice for HTML (i.e. good meta tags, title etc), research your keywords and make sure they are in the page and title etc, make sensible use of H1, H2 etc etc

And as said, try to get your URL out there by swapping with decent established sites etc. Thats not always applicable for all sites, but its worth a try.

I have dabbled in adwords a little, and advertised on a couple sites in the past. Never had much success from that, so getting traffic from search engines is basically the way I go.

I get enough traffic from search engines, so I now just concentrate on retaining it as much as possible, while working on getting my sites to show up well on the search engines.

I just focus on making useful, easy to navigate sites with good content. The only money I spend on marketing is for contests.

It is quite possible, but really I guess you would be talking MFA sites for this, I have quite a few sites that have just seo to get traffic and earn $1-$25 per day.

For larger sites with really good content you need to use every tool at your disposal of which SEO is only one. SE traffic is hard to 'not get used to', although your main objective should be to weatherproof yourself against things like google algo updates/serp changes so that you can have a more stable income that is not relyant on free traffic.

Based on the responses above everyone has there blend of optimization... Its finding the right combination that works for your site... Writing or Creating lots of quality content with relevant keywords and authority links to the content is IME the best route... But its easier said than done... Lots of work to generate content... in the end you will have a great site...

I dont spend a cent on advertising at the moment, all of my traffic is from the SE's and from article directories and forum signature promotion.
I'd love to keep it this way but I realise if you want to compete with the big keywords, you usually have to pay.

I never spent even 0,01$ to advertise my sites..
all visitors come by Search Engines or word of mouth (one of my sites is mentioned in magazines, on the radio etc. from time to time: www.wistudat.net )
