If you really want to beat Aaron Wall and rank #1 for 'seo book' then you should find a good place for parasite hosting so you have the trust of another domain. And then you should do trackback/comment spam as well as XSS on trusted sites for more trusted links.

I know that seobook.com has many links from the open source community because of donations Aaron has made. Consider that he has links from several pr7 - pr9 domains that I've seen. Of course the links are not on the front page of those domains, but still I've seen his links on pr7 and pr8 pages.

So unless you have a lot of cash that you want to spend on link building then I believe the BH technique is your only way. And if you succeed with just building decent links etc. then I'd say you've wasted a lot of time since you could have optimized for money making terms instead.
