I believe it's normal SEO tactics, except that you should name your images like baby.gif if the keyword your targeting is "baby".

I haven't tried this test but it may be worth investigating:

Build a small site with one image on each page, each with a different tactic: image1 - keyword file name, image2 - keyword alt text, image3 - keyword title text, image4 - keyword around image, image5 - keyword in folder name, image6 - keyword in page title, etc...

Link up and wait until the site gets indexed in G Images and then see what images come up for the keyword. Use an obscure keyword to make it easier. This may also give you a readout on the relative value of each method.

It always takes more time to get images indexed than regular pages. But link popularity is a factor here if you want to speed up the process.

Regarding rankings for your images you should know that on-page optimization, and linkage to the page where the image is shown, also are important factors. Just optimize the page as you'd normally do and then use a god filename and a alt tag.

Depending on the type of your images you're right on track since image search still seems rather untapped and there's a lot of traffic to gain.

One of my sites gets lots of visitors from the google image search. It's an emoticons website and I have several images (emoticons, smilies...) indexed in the google image search engine. As "SEO Portal" mentioned above .. use alt and title tags to describe your images. From my experience it takes some time (weeks ...) to get a few images listed in Google image search ...
