I have been studying a PR7 site similar to one of my projects. One of the things I have discovered is the varied use of directory submissions. More specifically, the way they are deep linking their site.

I am about to embark on my own link building campaign and wondered how important it was to deep link rather than linking the Front page. It seems like a lot of extra work. Is it worth it to use this type of strategy?

Yes it is important to do some deep links, mainly because its doesn't look natural for Google to have all the links point to your home page, search engines look for natural links pointing to your website, the idea is to make those link look as natural as possible, having hundreds of links pointing to your home page with no deep links doesn't look natural.
I would also suggest spreading out your link building campaign over a period of months, there shouldn't be any link spikes pointing to your website, that wouldn't look natural as well

Hope I've helped.

Any one of you guys have experience in trading links? I've always thought that I needed to trade links without using those services that do it automatically (I get such crappy link requests from that) to increase my PR but I'm not so sure how to go about it.

Atomm, that't a really interesting issue, because natural site growth implies part of the incoming links to point to deep pages.

On the other hand, I see that most of the people are concerned about boosting the PR and SERPs for their index page.

I am interested if your competitor has a big % of links coming to the deeper pages. With my sites it happens naturally that I promote different pages. For example, one deep page has a contest of the service, so I am sharing this contest with the community and think that some of the links are already indexed (was not checking for this page).

But I think the vast majority of incoming links still point to index page with my sites. So can you approximate how much links are pointing to deeper pages with your competitor?

P.S. Thanks for nice words about the link building strategy we discussed on another thread

Just FYI, reciprocal links and directory submission links are worth far less than quality one-way inbound links.

I think all matters. And fully focusing on one type only can be a problem with Google. So, build different types of links, just make them relevant.
