Here's an example of what I'm trying to get across: Say I want to make a network of 50 sites about music artists.

Would it be okay to buy a completely generic domain, say musicartistnetwork.com, for all the sites, and use either subdirectories, or subdomains for each of the 50 sites, or would it be a better idea to buy 50 domains?

Is the SEO advantage that great for TLDs?

I'd sub-niche, personally. If all artists were part of the same genre, like punk or country, I'd use one site. Then maybe have 5 sites, each targeting a different genre.

I agree. If it's kind of generic, go with one domain and subdomain or use directories, but if you want to specifically target different niche's, then run with the separate domains and be careful how you interlink them.

If you are looking to only cash on google adsense here then get individual domains since google wouldnt store all the subdomains right away
