I never knew that.

My MSN rankings changed because they changed my sites description from my META description to my DMOZ description.

Meh, my META description was better.

Sometimes the SEs do this if they feel that you DMOZ description is a better match for your content and for what searchers are really looking for. You can stop the SEs from using your DMOZ description by adding the following to your meta tags:

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP">

Google has recently begun to support this tag so it will work for the main bots. If you only want MSN affected, change Robots to MSNbot.

They might use your dmoz description, but that doesnt mean they run off of it, MSN is a search engine, dmoz is a directory

What's interesting is that the search engines can mess with your click through rates that way. I'd be interested to see a comparison of click through rates for dmoz vs meta tag descriptions. Something like, similar rankings, comparable terms, comparable sites in terms of general marketing, brand recognition, and any other imaginable factor that might affect click-throughs.

That's true... they often will use the DMOZ description unless you specify otherwise

Google is a search engine as well and they use the DMOZ description if you have a site in it.
