Are forums just doomed to not get on the first page because of excess code or am I missing something?

My site: Nerdpoint isn't found in the top 50 at all on google or any other search engine for the term nerd.

However in the top 10, sites include "www.N-E-R-D.com" which has less listings in google than nerdpoint and a PR6 same as we do. And according to http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/web...om&phrase=Nerd
n-e-r-d doesnt even have half of the things checked off that my forums do.

While I see the domain is quite exact for nerd, my domain aslo has nerd in it. Others in the top 10 do as well, however there are 1-3 that do not. I really don't have a clue how SEO works and would love some pointers to boost my search engine ranking to get on the first page for "nerd".

We do rank #1 For "Nerdy Discussion" however that isn't searched at all.

Thanks in advance

Some factors to ranking high in google is backlinks, you need some "quality and relevant" link backs to your site. Also the anchor text is important.

You need to search out some linking partners and choose your anchor text carefully and ensure not to use the same anchor text for all links, change it around a bit or it ends up looking like spam.

Hmm sitemaps will help correct? Also if I make sure all the Alt tags have relevent text and make all of the image names and links to pages containing the keywords?

I really don't get this yet. I have PR6, more listings on google then half of my competition yet am not even in the first 30 pages.

Is this solely due to back links? Or what the heck is going on?

ok looking a bit more into this for you, the domain was only registered in May 2006 so there is a high chance you are stuck in the google sandbox.

Having a PR6 means nothing when it comes to SERPS as they are totally seperate. The higher the PR does NOT equal higher results in google.

Using the following site : http://www.mcdar.net/ you can check a lot of different things out. If you look at "Keyword Analysis Tool" for your webby and the term 'nerd' you don't even have a allinanchor yet so in theory you site is not ment to be placed anywhere within the results for the term nerd.

If I was you I would keep trying to build quality links from relevant site, don't get to many links a month, maybe 50 or under and carry on getting people to post on the forums.

Subbmitting a site map is useful if your whole site is not indexed in google really, some poeple like it some hate it, I have not had any problems with them but maybe I've been lucky.

As a side note: remember that google is rather fooked up at the moment with no one really knowing what the hell is going on, there data is all over the place.

Just get the backlinks, build the community up, produce quality content and in time (time is a big factor) you pages will rank better in google.

Thanks J.P, that makes a bit more sense I forgot about the whole google sandbox for new sites to prevent them from doing well until established.

Really the sandbox is a unknown amount of time. I know some sites that never go in it, some 1-6 months other can be over a year.

I 'think' its not so much a site that gets sandbox but your keywords, a site which it's targeted keyword is say "computers" for example will be in the sandbox a lot longer that a site thats main keyword is "computer mice tracker ball".

To me, the sandbox depends on the competitiveness of your targeted keyword.

But this is my theory shared by a few others.

My Tips:

1.Check in overture for your main keyword.

2.Go to the bottom of the list and make a note of the bottom 5 (i.e. the lowest searched strings).

3.Go back to your site and setup some pages/seo/sem to rank well for those keywords.

4.once ranking well (or at least on the first page of google) go to point 1.

Keep doing this and in theory you will have a site that will be ranking high for every search string that is use, hence corner the market.

Get some quality links pointing to your site, and I think you will quickly forget the sandbox.
