You know what, this is a very interesting issue, and I wonder how important sitemaps actually are. I personally run a bunch of blogger-based blogs, and have found that after a few dozen inbound links, i'm fully crawled. Not a sitemap in view. And my main blog is fully indexed at yahoo and msn as well.
So the question is: are they worth the effort, assuming you're just using them for indexing?
I've seen other uses, such as finding where the robots have difficulty and encounter errors. Apparently, there's also a nice integration with google analytics.
All in all, though, I'm personally unconvinced of their utility, given I can achieve what their main purpose is without them. Indeed, most sites should be able to, since full indexation was possible prior to sitemaps' existence.
