I'm writing a proposal for a hotel website that's interested in hiring me to do seo for them. I'd like to hear your suggestions for link sources/and or how to get the links.
So far, I've thought of:

Suppliers
City travel agencies
Tour operators
city tourist attractions
city nightclubs
Local and travel Directories
Blogs (pay per post?)
DMOZ
LII
SBD

Anyone else? Anyone looking for some link partners?

Also, I may also be doing seo for the owner's youth hostel, for which I would aim to get similar links, but geared to a younger audience.

I'd also be interested in your ideas as to a link strategy. Besides ordinary requests/link swaps/purchases etc., I'm considering a contest, and/or a content strategy as link bait.

Top 10 Nightlife activities for the location

Top 10 family activities etc etc

Maybe get out there and start posting reviews... amazon etc anything you can think of?

If they are constantly you could utilize job directories/craigslist type communites.

If the hotel has any local business partnerships or can arrange them, perhaps you ccould have a coupon book created that is only available via the website. Could be a nice little piece of linkbait if marketed correctly.

Just some quick ideas off the top of my head. Hope it sparks something for you.

is BlueHat SEO. Definetly worth a read, and will probably inspire some new project that is going to take up some of your valuable time.

Personally, I wouldn't go for the pay-per-post on blogs. Once the post drops from the main page, its value becomes significantly less. I actually do a lot of SEO for the travel industry, and it ain't easy!

Thanks for the tips guys. Mike, for the coupon booklet, I'm guessing some sort of code generates random-numbered, printable coupons? Sounds good, but wouldn't it be open to scamming/copying?

Rob, you make a good point about the drop. But the fact it is in a post means likely Click throughs. For Google, the likelier something is to be clicked, the better the link, which was my reasoning there. Any other ideas to get into blogs?

Anyone else with some linkbait ideas?

Also, Rob, would you care to link up some of your SEO clients with mine? They have two PR4s, with first page rankings on some tough terms.

If there is a budget for it you could take registration and snail mail the voucher. Or, perhaps provide a downloadable voucher that is redemable for the coupon/booklet upon arrival. Again if there is a budget for it, voucher could print out with the persons name to prevent fraud.

Personally I would look for something cheap to offer a coupon for and not worry about the reprints.

I like it, that makes sense. Do you have any experience with the coupon idea?

On a related note, I was considering setting up an affiliate program. They already have an informal one with major travel sites, and I imagine that setting up a proper affiliate program might garner lots of backlinks and such... Assuming these aren't treated as plain old bought links the engines disregard.

Thanks for the offer, Bookworm, but I don't engage in reciprocal linking. Here's a free suggestion for you, though. If your client puts out a coupon code of some sort, all of those blogs that harvest coupon codes for websites will link back to you

Hey Rob,

Thanks for the tip about the coupon code. Do you know any opinion leaders in the travel coupon blogosphere I might contact directly?

What about general travel blogs? You had clients succesfully placed on any in the past?

Thanks for the help guys

No opinion leaders, sorry. We issue the promo codes for our properties directly through our newsletter. I've had press on blogs with other clients (media-related), but right now I'm going after BIG fish

.gov anyone?

Thanks for the info Rob. I'll have to do my own research I guess (checking travel blog forums?).
