Many webmasters like to have a network of websites on a similar topic to help generate extra revenue. The three basic methods would be creating different sites with different domains, different subdomains, or just subfolders. I'd like to see what other webmasters like to use and why. Also, what linking scheme between your sites would you use?

I would have the links as prominent and important as possible. Also, you might consider doing them as a chain, so each has one way links. e.g. a-b-c-a ...
If it's affordable, hiring content developers (with a track history) is ideal, because you won't be able to generate content regularly for several sites.
It's a question of budgets and planning, where I'm concerned. Figuring out what you're going to outsource, what you do yourself, and how you monetize. Especially, it's important to know how soon you expect to make back your investment.

I'd use different domains, registered to different people/companies if possible. Depending on whether there's a geographic strategy or not (i.e. are you targeting a city, e.g. "NY used cars"), you might also want to consider having various hosting companies across the country. If there is a geographic strategy, get a few different hosts in your target city.

But then, these are just my humble opinions, based mostly on what i've read on SEO. My "network" isn't so succesful (though it is new).

Domains, subdomains,... In the end it doesn't really matter, although I would prefer dedicated domain names. In my opinion, you should focus on just one site/project first, and if moderately successful after lets say a month, start another project. The first month will give you time to get the project really going, because you should be involved in each site. Don't start 10 sites that in the end, suck...

When cosindering projects, you need to be sure that the content is going to be good and that people will want to read it. I've seen lots of little networks with 3rd class content (gaming "networks" expecially) go down the drain because they thought that SEO optimization, design and so on will get them through while having unoriginal content. It just doesn't work...

It could be useful to target a broad niche for your network, so each site can compelemnt the other. For example lets say you're building a sport site network. You put up a tennis, football and basketball site. You could complement the network by having a special forum site for people wwho are looking in what sport to go with, and then through advice "guide" them to your sites and so on...

I have a small network or travel sites, each have there own domain names. Because the 3 sites in question kind of focus on the same tourist area interlinking is quite easy without it looking like spam.

I have 1 overall site and 2 resort specific, the over all obviously points to the resort specific sites in a few areas allowing not just links but deep links. The Resorts specific both point back to the general site but just to the home page.

Having 3 different sites allows me to cover 70% of the main search terms for the Island, where if everything was in just the one domain then more specific competition sites would be able to out rank me easily. Of course this means a bit more work for me, but if I can rank top for 70% of the search terms I should be earning a good amount of money.

Can you just link straight up, site-wide on every page, especially index?

What about www.ifroggy.com, that guy seems to be doing farely well.

Those sorts of links often look like paid links, unless they're in a blogroll. Point being, SEs won't consider them. JP's looking for link love.
