The honest answer... You need as many links you can get! Never stop getting links!
There is no specific number of links needed to get a number one spot. My advice would be to find out how many links your competitor has and try to get more than that...
My current niche is not too big... I only have 70 backlinks and I'm in the top 5 for my few keywords I'm targeting. It really depends on what niche you are in.
For a guestimate, check out what your competitors have, and plan to need more than the average site. Remember you are also fighting the age of the domains/links, so you'll need to really impress Google to beat out those older more trusted sites.
How to find out, how many links do you need to become #1? :о
Or at least to get in top10 in Google for some specific keywords?
The total number of links is not so important, what is important is where the links are. Not all links are equal and one good link can be worth thousands of bad ones.
You'll be needing exactly 3.33 links more than your competitors, as per Google's supersecret LinkRank technology, which can only be found on Google scholar at the moment. Don't tell though, or else everyone will be begging to buy my superkickass AffiliateRankProduct to optimize their LinkRank scores.
My awfully lame humour aside, there's no real number. Depends on the competition really.
