As said by freetraff, extra links that you'll get from press releases are good, but don't expect them to do any major changes to your PR and especially for your rankings, since most PR agencies will post your links using your domain name, which is in most cases not the keyword your targeting, furthermore, those links have little to no value since most of them are posted on new pages sometimes 2 directories deep.
I would look at press releases as a good way to grab some attention, especially with a well written PR in an interesting topic!
