Hey guys -

I'm currently in the middle of transitioning my site from one system to another, and have come to a few decisions I need to make. At the moment, each of the primary sections of my site are separated into distinct subdomains of the same site, such as studio.neverside.com, forums.neverside.com, articles.neverside.com, etc. My developers originally set things up that way, but since I'm making a large change right now, I'm reassessing whether things should be done that way.

From an SEO perspective, is is bad to have different content sections from the same site separated by subdomains?

The site in question does very badly in search engines (heh that may be a telling factor lol), so I'm not concerned with losing any current search engine positions by doing this. I've searched through my copy of SEOBook, and through a number of forums, but haven't found a conclusive answer yet.

Anyhow, thanks a ton for your help!

It doesnt so much matter if you have the content in directories or not from and SEO perspective, from what I have experienced.

The key is getting the index page of those folders linked from your main page, and having all the links withing that folder linked from that folder's index page.

That keeps everything no more than 3 levels deep. home page ->first click(subfolder)->final content.

Do that, and get your homepage at a PR5 or above. PR6 actually seems to get you deep content indexed even better by google.

If you have more than one domain name, make sure they all redirect to one domain. In addition, make sure you redirect to http://www or http://domain. Doesn't matter which you go for, but make sure all your traffic redirects to one or the other.

subdomains is considered like seperate sites by SE. So in fact, it's as if you had multiple mini sites. So this can be a good thing if you put a lot of content on each of the subdomain and link them together.

Generally, subdomains are considered as separate sites. Folders, in turn, are just that, folders. Having stuff in folders gives certain some weight to the website, if people link to your homepage instead of internal pages.

To determine whether you need to go for subfolders or subdomains is whether your site sections are all centered around your main site or not. If they have different target audiences, then subdomains or separate domains are in order.
