I just have a new website launched and I suddenly found myself becoming fixated with SEO. Are meta tags still in use? The ebooks and other resources I’ve read have different points on meta tags.

There are varying opinions on this one, I use the desription tag on some of my pages and don't bother with the rest. Some people think the keyword tag is still important as well. It is up to you really, do whatever you think is best.

I use them both - keyword and description. I have also found that using more than one sitemap in WMT for google increases the number of indexed pages.

Meta tags help the search engines understand what the page is about. That's why you need to use unique meta tags for each page.

Meta description is also used as a snippet, shown in the SERPs, so it is good to use some call to action and your keywords there to get more clicks.

If every page has a unique title and unique description for your site, then the Engines are more likely to see them as unique content. More unique content means better SERPs.

Use both the keyword and description meta tags on all your pages, but they must be unique and relevant to each page. I did an article on how Google uses your description tag. Have a read and let me know what you think of the article (you can leave comments there) Take control over page snippets"
