Hi all,

I recently launched a free dating website, goobang.com and am trying to do some SEO work on it since i do not seem to be anywhere in google unless you seach for goobang. I have placed keywords, meta tags etc but was wondering the importance of the actual domain name is to google since I just aquired iFreeDating.com and was wondering if i changed to that url would it help ?

Thanks for any advice.

Jason.

hi there, while a keyword in the domain does help, I wouldnt go and change yours. if plentyoffish.com can be successful without the word "dating" in their domain, so can you.

I always think "branding". Get a keyword in if you can, but if not, make the name memorable for your target audience.

For yourself - I mean, seriously, Goo Bang? iFreeDating sounds much better.

iFreeDating is a much better choice IMO. Unless of course you use goobang for a swingers meetup (still a little hardcore for this use) site or some sort of AFF site. Goobang will put a taste in peoples mouths (no pun intended)...whether good or bad.

is BlueHat SEO. Definetly worth a read, and will probably inspire some new project that is going to take up some of your valuable time.

Hehe, thanks guys for the input. I too am leaning towards iFreeDating but i wanted to get some opinion before rebranding, not a step to take lightly. Keep those suggestions/thoughts coming in !

Thanks,
Jason.

I agree - Goobang not only sounds odd, but it sounds like the sort of party you would dread ended up at.

iFreeDating is ok, but I'd go for something a little catchier - tacking "i" and "e" as a prefix to domains is very 2001.

I made a VoIP site and i am number one for VoIP questions but unfortunately no one searches for that. I went through all of the pages in google for voip info and I wasn't even in there. I guess I am seriously SEO challenged.

I am not sure if I am #1 for voip questions because of my domain ( voipquestions.net ) or because there is probably a lot less competition for those keywords.

I don't mean to rail on ya or anything. But how did you come up with the domain goobang.com?

Google ignores Meta Tags, but Yahoo considers it... now will you target Yahoo or Google ?

You target both and include them anyway. Its good web development.

Anyway, on the domain name side. I like the name "ifreedating.com" however, if you are targetting search engines for "dating" ifreedating would be the domain name of choice. Not because they give weight to urls (even though they could, we just dont know), but because if someone is to link to you with the name "ifreedating.com" they are MUCH more likely to include the word "dating" in the anchor tag than a site with the name "goobang"

Got to agree with the others. That name is a little harsh. It doesn't sound like a dating site if you know what I mean. The search engines are getting smarter all the time so from an SEO standpoint I don't believe it has much of an impact anymore, but from a branding perspective, ABSOLUTELY. The latter is a much better name.

Strangely 'Goobang' came from an aussie friend of mine and i just liked it. Actually it is an aboriginal name for a nature reserve in New South Wales, Australia.
