Go to google.com, search on the target keyword your website has planned to work on.
Then check the top ranking website, learn from it, and do better.

How to do better? Here’s some basic practices…

1. place keyword in < h1> tag in very top of the page

2. place keyword phases as the first word in < title> only, and contain no more than 3 keywords

3. On your webpage, set your first graphic with ALT set to your target keyword

4. build a text based sitemap, add ALT if it is an image

5. OPML / RSS site map

6. bold or underline keyword (1 or 2 times only)

7. The key word/phrase should be used again very near the end of the page.

8. try to register a good domain name with keyword (I guess keyword in subdirectory is ok)

9. navigation menu on the right, since googlebot looks from top and left

An empty table cell will fix the left navigation issue. CSS can be used to fix this also.

Image alt is not for keyword stuffing, it is for alternate text in case the image can't be displayed. It should be a short description of whatever information is conveyed in the image.

I don't see how placing navigation on the right is helpful, users will be confused. They expect the navigation to be at the top or on the left. Googlebot reads your content in whatever order it is displayed in the source code. You could place the navigation at the bottom of the source code and reposition it with css, but that will confuse users of text only browsers as they will see the navigation at the bottom of the page.

Just my opinion, but you should be building websites for users not robots

No kidding

What counts above ALL are these three factors:

1. Age of site. Older sites rank higher than new ones, all else being equal. Alot of top 10 sites in the SERPS for competitive keywords are older than one year. A lot of sites are 3-8 years old or even older. You can't fake age. Only way to get around this barrier is TIME.

2. INbound links & PR. You need lots of INbound links of decent pagerank to boost your ranking. It can takes years to accumulate enough links to get a high PR but it pays off in the end. If you do a google search for the term inquestion you will see a lot of the sites in the top 10 have a PR between 7 and 5. Make sure the anchor text for the link is relevant to your site. If you have a myspace layouts site for example and you want to rank top 10 in Google for 'myspace layouts' have the anchor text say 'myspace layouts' .

3. Basic on page SEO. This includes domain name, title tags. You DONT need to worry about meta tags or repeating the keyword. That doesn't make a big difference.

There you go. Follow these three steps and you should see good rankings. But it will take a long time though for most people.

That is completely wrong, meta tags are a necessity and makes a difference, many search engines including the big Google use them.

Um google hardly uses them. They don't make much of a difference in yahoo either. Meta tags were useful in 1998 but not anymore because people were keyword stuffing them.

Meta tags are only used to help the search engine to determine what topic the site about and to show a snippet of the page in the SERPs.

If you have unique meta tags, you not only have more unique content on your pages, but will also have higher click-through from the SERPs.

Didn't know the myth of the all-powerful meta tags is still alive.

Btw, you just need to write for your visitors with the keywords in mind, that's all. Using headings, subheadings and lists helps users and the search engines as well, for instance.

Googlebot reads pages in the order in which everything is in the HTML source. With CSS, you can display anything anywhere.

But... my tests to date have shown that Google doesn't care so much where the content is on your page. I've moved it all around in the source and on the screen, with no effect on the SERPS.

However, layout is very important for CTR. Always keep the heat map in mind when laying out your sites.

Here's my quick SEO Checklist:

On-Page SEO Optimization Checklist for a Web Page

* Check the URL
o Does the URL contain your keywords?
o Is the URL too long?
o Does the URL use hyphens as keyword seperators?
* Check the Page Title
o Does the Page Title contain your keywords?
o Is the Page Title too long?
* Check the Description Tag
o Does the Description tag contain your keywords?
o Is the Description tag too long?
* Check the Keywords Tag
o Does the Keywords tag contain your keywords?
o Is the Keywords tag too long?
* Check the Headings
o Are your keywords used in the H1 tag?
o Are your keywords used in the H2 tags?
o Are your keywords used in the H3 tags?
* Check the ALT text
o Do your keywords exist in the ALT text of an image on the page?
* Check your HTML
o Does your page validate as proper HTML?
* Check your body text
o Does your body text mention your keywords enough?
o Does your body text contain enough content?
o Is your body text human-readable?
* Does the page have excess HTML markup which could be removed?

Off-Page SEO Optimization Checklist for a Web Page

* Is the page listed in your sitemap?
* Is it possible to issue a press release about this new web page?
* Can you submit this new web page to web directories?
* Should you mention this new web page on relevant web forums?
* Have you traded reciprocal links with similar web pages?
* Have you added anchor-text links to this new web page from your other pages?

On-Page SEO Optimization Checklist for a Web Site

* Does your web site have a site map?
* Does your web site have plain HTML links to between pages?
* Does every page of your web site link back to the index page?

Off-Page SEO Optimization Checklist for a Web Site

* Is it possible to issue a press release about this new web site?
* Can you submit this new web site to web directories?

There si so much SEO bull being spread it aint even funny

Here is a list of of so caleld SEO tips:

http://www.site-report.com/google_ranking.php

These tips DONT WORK

The fectors that matter for ranking are :

PR and inbound links

Age of site

mENTION THE KEYWORD ATLEAST ONCE SOMEWHERE IN THE PAGE BODY

Thats all you need to know about seo. Im tired of these stupid mysths and crap.

ON PAGE SEO IS STUPID. IT DOESNT WORK IN GOOGLE OR YAHOO. THIS ISN'T 1998. TAKING A KEYWORD AND PUTTING IT IN H1 ,H2, H3....H8 TAGS AND PUTTING IT IN THE URL AND TITLE AND REPEATING IT 1000 TIMES HAS NOOOOOOOOO EFECT AT ALL FOR COMPETITIVE KEYWORDS.

This is not a good way of thinking.

Good on-page SEO will amplify the effects of good off-page SEO.

If you aren't doing your on-page SEO, you are forcing yourself to work harder at off-page SEO to make up for it.

On-page SEO is an important base upon which to build. From there, you use off-page SEO to keep building.

Also, be careful not too focus on too few keywords. There is a considerable amount of traffic off the beaten path and one of the best ways to build a new web empire is to focus on those less competitive niche's where competition is weak.

Well, you surely need to take all aspects of creating, optimizing and promoting a website into account. If you lack in one, you are seeking trouble.

For instance, while on-page factors are only that, you'll have to get 20-40% more links to gain the same rankings as with rightly optimized pages. Ever tried to rank a page that doesn't have keywords in title and heading tags?
