Is it possible to get a high ranking in the search engines(on a subject with little competition)without a lot of link trading?

I'm asking because I have no idea where to get people linking to my site when my niche is so obscure.

With little competition, you can rank using on-page SEO and:

Directory submissions
Article submissions
Press Releases
Buying Links

None of these require link trading.

You can also offer quality articles for your industry publications. Normally, you'd get a link and some traffic as well.

I have never traded a link in my life and we have great rankings. So yes, it's possible.

You see, if you create quality content, you can get links with relevant anchor text to it easily from relevant resources.

Best links are those that drive targeted traffic (they are, naturally, from topical websites with relevant anchor text), so you'd rather aim at providing value to your customers.

I just want to echo what was said about content. Good content will naturally be linked to, so if you aren't interested in trading or buying links, focus on content.

Clearly mention on your site that you want links and explain them why it will help.
Actively participate in online forums and discussion groups with your signatures.
Post press release about your website from a good provider.
Write articles related to your website and post them online.

Use free directories, free viral marketing, Blogs, link exchange and classifieds
help a lot to generate targeted traffic.

results 340 my postion #1
site run link site is #2
time about 10 days
domain name matches search phrase

Linking helps you get more traffic, but if you just write quality content articles and post them to article directories, you will get ranked quickly. Also do some search engine optimization on your site by choosing keywords that are searched around 5000-10000 times per month. You can find that out by using a Keword Research Tool such as SEO Book. If you place your keywords in your title, description, headers on your site, write an article using your keywords, and sprinkle your keywords throughout your site, you will be ranked quickly. I got to the #2 spot in Google for my chosen keyword almost immediately after SEOing my site. Good luck!

Well, on-page optimization is only a part of the battle. Instead of spamming article directories with low-medium quality articles, you can write excellent article and post them in the journals. This is an excellent way to get links to your intenal pages from trusted sources. But it has to be very useful and unique information.

I've read about LSI and siloing on another forum, and it's working too.

I've seen the example of a website with 20 links that has a higher ranking than another website with 2800 links for the same keywords.

The concept is that you don't have to practice keyword stuffing all other your page, but to insert all the related and "expert keywords" on that page.

The search engine find you more relevant!
