What is the strangest term your site has been ranked for? Looking through my Google Analytics reports for this week alone, my forum has ranked for (amongst many other bizarre searches):
  • Google #1: 00063fea
  • Google #7: hollaween mask
  • Google #5: poroxy
  • MSN #3: soopar
  • MSN #1: speshul gale

You're not #1 anymore in Google for the term "00063fea". This thread is!

I've ranked for pretty weird terms, but interests me is who on earth actually searches these terms?

Thus the beauty of longtail searches. Put enough decent content out and even if you're not going to rank for the powerhouse term you're after you'll at least still get people to find you on something!

I agree. I have had a blog, a travelogue and every now and then, I sit down with my friends and we look at the search terms the blog is found under. Sometimes it can be VERY funny and sometimes a little bit disturbing.

Who does the ranking? Sure sounds like people just putting whatever they want to...

Long tail theory is just... a weak theory IMHO. Nobody is going to make decent money on long tails.
However, the consumers do get a good deal, that they find even the oddest things.

First of all, a theory is something that can't be proven. Long tail is not a theory. The degree to which it exists and/or is valuable varies from site to site based on content, focus, target audience, industry, etc. If you approach long tail searches from a sales cycle standpoint, one could hypothesize that a search engine user who uses more words to describe what they are looking for is a better consumer. Why? Well if I want an apartment and you've only got them in Oviedo, Florida, then I'm worth a lot more to you when I search for "Oviedo FL apartments" than when I search for "apartments". Maybe I'm a more educated consumer and that's why I have a longer search string (specific about what I'm looking for) or maybe I don't know much but I'm typing that longer search string because my need for that product or service is strong enough that I'm willing to learn.

How do you check what terms a site is ranked for?

Well, basically you can't really tell until someone finds your site while searching for them. Stat software like AW-Stats or Google Analytics shows you where your visitors came from, and from which search terms on search engines.

Actually, you can. In Google webmaster central (Sitemaps) in the query stats you can see what position your site ranks for specific keywords. Local stats programs only show what users actually clicked on in the SERPS, sitemaps shows also what they did not.

It's actually very interesting.

Of course you can check what your rankings are. Use software such as WebCEO or the many others that are out there. Plus analysing your server logs can tell you who came from where for what.

What I meant is that you can't say that your site is ranked #1 for h9ge8jkjA%Jds until someone finds it. It's such an obscure keyword that you wouldn't consider even checking it in the first place.
