i am new to seo but know some in the bussiness, i have read a number of places that using your keywords within bold tags as well as italics will help you out the same way headings do...and that you should only do this once or twice per word, but my friend seems to disagree...does this help at all and if so should i keep it to a minimum?

You should use text highlighting such as bold, italic or color to assist the user in scanning the page not because of some mythical direct effect on the search engine rankings.

Take a look at this advice I posted on writing good copy and see if see if that helps.

Agreed. If you are really needing to call attention to a specific area of your site, then make use of header tags. That is if things haven't changed as of late...

Bolding and Italics will help the user to make the article more attractive to them thus search engine love what visitors love

However, using h1 tags does show search engines the important content. So it's better to use these than a bold and font-size tag to note your titles.
