I have a site that finally made it to the first/second page of Google. When you go to site.com you are redirected to site.com/forum. Would the site rank better if I had a splash page?

Depends on what you have on the splash page. If your forum is already indexed on the serps then having a splash page would do nothing.

Search engine will not index splash page. Therefore, it has no effect on rankings, rather, it may decrease your ranking if you replace the content page with a totally flash-powered page.

If you still want a splash effect page, do consider to embed it as part of the object on that page. At least the content there is still indexable by the bots

First off, search engines do index splash pages. They even index flash pages (just type in "chocolate" in google and check out the top results). The problem with flash is that the SE can't tell anything about it like they can with text.

As for your splash page question. I doubt it will help much. You might get a little boost if you put a page that has your keywords in the text. However, google doesn't look too much at keyword density or things like that so I doubt it would do much in google, maybe yahoo/msn.

Might be worth it if you've got some ads on the splash page? I've never been a fan of splash pages myself, though. From a usability standpoint it's a deterrent to proceed any further. I, personally, want to go directly to a page with the information I'm looking for, not a splash page.

Splash pages are 1990's. They annoy most users so I wouldn't even think of having a splash page.
