Has anyone gotten at least one their sites to the top of Google or Yahoo for competitive keywords as a result of free directory backlinks only?

I personally have never seen a real benefit from free directory backlinks. I'm currently competing for a very competitive term and I can tell you that free directory backlinks would do this site more harm than good at this point.

I have to agree. I have seen sites drop very fast due to diretory submission, but it can be balanced out by building other links with it IMO.

Right, it's a weighted thing. Your quality backlinks have to outweigh your crap backlinks. Keeping that in mind, why would you want backlinks from some place that Google knows gives them out to everyone for free?

Courtesy of a website I found back in college, I'm now supposedly an ordained reverend. But do you think the Vatican would take that seriously?

Exactly. I have had a client decide it would be a good idea to do mass directory submission while I was working their sites... always fun to have someone working against you when a check is hanging in the blanace. They looked at a few higher quality paid submissions I had done and started going crazy. Was a learning experience for me though and everyone since has been told not to do it or keep it at a minimum.

Oh. On a side note. I am renewing my vows next weekend.. are you available?
