Directories, forum sigs, blog articles.
Another good one is community profiles. You'd be surprised how easy it is to get a few great backlinks if you email a webmaster with similar interests as you are providing on your site. If your site is truly worth linking to, they will be happy to do it!

Word of mouth. The forum takes care of backlinks for me now that I have active members on my biggest site. I get about 3-4 new backlinks a day to different threads on my site.
