Is there a keyword limit?

Hey,

I was chatting with my buddy who seems to know a lot about SEO and was telling me how to do good in the search engines. He had a lot of good tips, although one that I wasn't too sure about was the keyword limit. I copied around 60-80 keywords and inserted them in my meta tags. He told me that there was no limit. Although I sort of remember reading somewhere that only like 20 of the first keywords are actually read or used. Can anyone verify the actual limit on keywords?

Thanks,
Andrew

Most search engines do not care about meta keywords anymore. But I would try to keep the number low (20 words), otherwise it might look like a spam site stuffed with unrelated keywords

I agree that while you want to place as many relevant keywords as possible you don't want to look like you're keyword stuffing. Meta tags aren't as important as they once were.

Good point. I knew there was a reason, and I guess that is it. Thanks for the help.

Keep the number under 20 definitely, 5-10 is good. Don't repeat all combinations of plurals etc, SEs are smarter than that these days and even understand related terms (LSI), so you don't need every possible variation. Just stick your main keywords in and don't worry too much about it. Make them unique to each page too, content specific.

And don't forget your meta description tag - make it keyword intensive, but more importantly, make it sell your site - when a user sees it in the SERPs make it grab their interest and click through to your site.

Keywors stuffing by any means is spamming. Mow-a-days, SEs are getting smarter to pick and drop you to their sandboxes. The algo's tend to become human-likely as days apss by.

A long long time ago I remember someone doing an experiment adding nonsense phrases in keywords tags to pages to see if there was a cut off point for which keywords were ignored and didn't rank. It was claimed that the the first 12 keywords ranked but the rest were ignored.

These days most people agree keywords won't help improve your rankings, but I'm sure that they can harm your rankings if you abuse them. I don't use them at all actually, but when I'm forced to I make them, unique on every page, as succinct as possible and relevant to that page. So on a sitemap page my keywords would be "Company Name, sitemap" and so on.

- I read from a seo expert that metatag keywords and all other metatag are a garbage and only two things you should take them
- title
- description metatag
and this method work
Your tactic will help you to get more problem not to resolve your problem.

Never go in for keyword stuffing and definitely there is a limit for that. Like what others just mentioned it is good to keep it low i.e. around 20 which should be your main and strong keywords.
