I am helping a friend make his store for a product he's selling. he's targeting the state and metro area he's from due to added price of shipping.

I was wondering if any methods that would be good for SEO to increase it through the SERP. It doesn't do much use posting all over the internet since it's more of a local store, but would obviously like to rank well when someone searches "California Widgets".

On the site there won't be a ton of content since it's a store (look at amazon), just the item names and descriptions, so what else can be done to help with SEO.

Make sure he's careful about duplicate content. That's one of the biggest problems I run into with online merchants. Make sure he doesn't have multiple copies of the same page, and that he writes unique product descriptions.

Local search optimization is a whole other animal, you could (and many do) make a career out of just that. I'm not taking new projects atm, but your friend is welcome to contact me on my blog if he wants a quick site review done and some recommendations.

Submit to various maps services, internet yellow pages, local directories, and get your address on a main page (in text). Getting links from other websites that can be found through local search will help too.

If you want your website to make money, you need to promote it, and the best way to do that is to get your name out there in the internet community.

I would recommend setting up a blog for the guy, and have him read 5 related blogs and comment on what they are talking about. ie build a relationship with them.

I would also advise putting together a list of 20 or so related forums (local or otherwise) that accept signatures which he'll need to post in at least once a week.

Try and find niche social bookmarking and social media sites as well. Get accounts there and get involved in the community.

Short of putting up a blog for the guy, have him put up a few expert articles that cover the main topics discussed in his online niche which he can link back to in the community.

All of these things will bring traffic and links that will give him a boost in the search engines. But the idea is to get involved in the community online. build buzz... he'll end up on top eventually.

But there is no magic button that you can push which will get you top rankings for an online store anymore.
