I dought it since directories do not provide relavant links. So your PageRank will go up from the backlinks, but it won't help your keyword ranking.

In directories , you can have a power of selecting categories , your own description , keywords , meta tags , still don't ?

that doesn't matter much because how many links, containing your keywords, link to the page your link is on? none...

true, but that would bring minimal value, off-site links would be much more valuable.

Try in addition to directory listings working on page SEO and getting your links in forum sigs and social bookmark sites.
In my experience only sites that gain natural backlinks can get #1 spots in competitive niches.
However comma.... if your niche isnt competitive at all directory links alone could easily get you the #1 spot. Too many variables to answer that broad a question.
Romestar, do you have a point because I'm not really following your reasoning here.

Sorry if I was hard to understand, I'll try to be a little more clear here...
Directory links won't help your keyword ranking very much since directories don't have off-page SEO to the various categories. They don't go out and get targeted links to their categories. For example, they don't buy links on web hosting review sites with the anchor text "Web Hosting" pointed to theirdirectory.com/webhosting. So search engines can only base what the category is about through the directory's on-page SEO, which is not nearly as powerful as off-page SEO. Also search engines will not see your link as being very high quality since there are many links on one page and little content. The only advantage to submitting to directories is that it boosts your PageRank (which has nothing to do with ranking for your keyword).
To sum it up, just submitting to free directories will not bring you top rankings since the links hold little value to the search engines.

I agree with George on this one, directory links alone would not secure a top spot for any competitive term. If your after a smaller fish, in a unpopular niche, it is possible to accomplish, but, as George said, it just depends. I'd suggest working other options, maybe a few that aren't free, but permanent. In the end, it would pay off faster and be much easiest to accomplish a number 1 spot.
Although, after you have that spot, even if it's an unpopular niche, someone's going to be gunning for that position. Something to think about so you don't accomplish it and fall right off.

I concur with what you said as only directory submissions are not good enough for any site to get the numero uno position. There are a lot of other factors also which count in getting a site at that position which is not all that an easy task.

Hi GeorgeB,
I'm still learning here.
Could you please explain to me what social bookmark sites are?
Thank you.

I haven't seen any affect on directory listings for my site. However, I believe that there are probably certain directories, used by SEO experts, that are under the radar screen (of Google for example), that can probably provide a big boost to rankings, as long as you are willing to pay for it. I am very skeptical of the "free directory" listings.

for non competitive terms like the name of you company with less than 2 million results i have done It with free online site builders accross the board (google, yahoo, msn). On more marketed with higher competition it will take more than just directory submissions.

Thousands of free directory listings are going to be a waste of time.
Finding high quality directories with relevant categories can help your SERP rankings greatly. I speak from experience not in theory.
