There are a few people out there that trust Google and the rest of their search engines to properly remove the duplicate content on their site and index the proper page. Why they trust a computer algorithm written by humans that indexes billions of pages is beyond me.
I was searching for some pictures just now and came across a perfect example of how Google does not properly detect duplicate content. Now while it is obviously benefiting this site this goes to show you that it can be turned around and hurt others as well.
Take a look at this picture: http://www.mustangevolution.com/brent/flaw.jpg
Notice the two entries on the first page for a pretty decent niche keyword. Now look at those urls. Two completely different domains with the exact same content. On top of that both of those urls redirect to another
These are the urls:
http://www.autosite.com/content/shared/articles/templates/index.cfm/article_id_int/1357
and
http://www.autobytel.com/content/shared/articles/templates/index.cfm/article_id_int/1357
Once clicked they redirect you to this url:
http://www.myride.com/research/index.html
One can only wonder how many people are having their sites hurt by allowing Google to choose which pages to index and which pages not to index.
This also strengthens my belief that Google does not properly handle redirects and that they can be too easily manipulated.
