I have an SEO question, lets say my website is currently ranking #1 on Google for the search term:

free wordpress themes

but I am ranked #5 for:

wordpress themes

Now, should I do more SEO work, such as acquiring more inbound links anchored "free wordpress themes" or "wordpress themes"? I would think the latter, but can anyone suggest if I should go with 2 keywords or does that not matter and stick with 3 keywords?

*The keywords used are hypothetical, the keywords I am aiming for are similar but in a different niche.

The website shouldn't have any real relation to the question, sorry.

Continue to mix your efforts, but stress more on the areas you are lacking. Remember, SEO is not a one time effort, but a continual process of gaining and maintaining rank.

I tend to think that the word "free" in the keyword isn't necessary. When I search for a wordpress theme, I never put the "free" in front of the keyword. I just assume that most wordpress themes are already "free". Therefore, I usually search for wordpress theme.

One of my page lists apartments in Corvallis, Oregon. I chose the keyword "corvallis oregon" instead of corvallis oregon apartments because I tend to assume (erroneously or not) that most people want to find apartments in Corvallis, Oregon. There is probably another Corvallis in another state, but so far, my keyword result has ranked on the first page of the google SERP for a while now.

So I would remove the excess and the obvious words and narrow it down.
