It appears as though my rankings took a plunge again to the second page. :glare: I've had a taste of the gain in visitors from ranking on the first page, and desperately want it back. I'm wondering if anyone is aware of on-site SEO tactics that could aid my SERPs, without jeopardizing the website’s appeal?

Google is very touchy about on-site SEO tweaks, and is quick to identify them as such. Also takes a lot longer now for them to be indexed than it used to. If I were you, I'd focus on off-site.

Here are my tips, some may have already been listed

1) Make sure your anchor text in your link says what you have your link url page optimized for - for example widgets.com/green-widget.html your link should read Green Widget

2) Deep link - get links to all pages of your site, make sure the person linking to you is relevant!!!! find the most relevant page on your link partner ( one way links are the best ) and have them link to a matching page on your site with the proper anchor text

3) Bloglines.com - search blogs there to find blogs that compliment your site, post some comments, make yourself known, then ask the author if you can do a guest post, provide a article that gives GOOD RELEVANT INFORMATION regarding a specific topic that relates to the page you are optimizing for, throw a couple contextual links in there and have the author post it.

4) Give something away free, people love this crap, make a widget that offers other website owners the abillity to add a cool tool to their website (provided by you) that also includes a link back to your site, remember, anchor text is important

5) Write some good link bait - make a cool article closely tied to what your site offers, make it appeal to the 15 to 20 year olds, ie: they don't want to read about how your site offers something that a million other sites do, they want to read about new techonology, free things, top 5,10 lists, controversial information, etc etc, once you make your article post it on your site then submit it to digg, reddit, all the social sites.

Thats a few, I have a huge list

Get the basics of your on-page optimization perfectly done by any professional or even you can do that by learning it online by just giving in a little time for it. As for the off-page optimization try getting organic backlinks from sites having higher PR than yours and you will see your PR as well as SERPs go up in a matter of time but you need to keep patience for that.

Thank-you so much; I've officially been ranking on the 1st page for the term 'online games' for a couple of months now! :clap:
My goal for the ensuing few months is to achieve the same ranking for 'free online games,' which definitely seems possible.

Nuke your competition! Remove their Wiki links, report their editorial links, link from their sites to the dark side... whatever it takes to win. This is the Wild West

Thank-you slayerment! As a slight update - I am now ranking on the 4th page for the rather popular keyword 'free online games,' which I have managed to achieve over the course of two weeks or less. Judging by my current pace, it shouldn't be long before the website is ranking highly for this competitive phrase as well. In all honesty, the suggestions provided in this thread will suffice in helping anyone achieve comparable results. :thumbup:

Mr. Websites, it's now Dec and you are ranking #8 on "online games", #23 on "free online games", not on top 50 for "free games". All from Google. Keep plugging those back links. Your anchor text must contain 60% of your primary target keyword, then 30% for secondary, then 10% for the 3rd one. Make sure to keep it at maximum of 8 links a day. There are owners of blogs that advocate "do follow" comments on blogs for that link juice. Type in "blogs that do follow" at Google and find plenty of them. In addition to this, it pays to visit seobook.com/archives/001792.shtml about 101 ways of building links to market your site. Hope this helps.

I know, my progress has been terribly slow. :glare: On the other hand, I have university (my priority) and a girlfriend to juggle, so this should be understandable. :yes: My goal for the brief holidays I have is to rank on the first page for 'free online games' or at least create the groundwork for this to occur within the coming weeks. I've altered my website's title so as to target the keyword 'free games' as well, but am wondering if the existence of the term is absolutely necessary within the title tags to rank highly for it? As is evident by visiting the website, the title is rather lengthy because of this change, but the attempt may open my doors to another highly relevant keyword.

I suppose I'm ranking on the first page for 'free online games' on 14 of Google's country-based search engines as can be seen here; there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. :winkiss:

I guess your effort have been working for you. Maybe you will like to consider adding using online classifieds to your marketing arsenal? Use it to make announcement about new games? Or competition?

Getting back links and exposure at the same time. It work wonders with good copywriting and with a little investment of time. And of course it is free.
