How can I optimize my website properly for search engines.

My website is fairly new, just registered the domain in December. I've been wanting to optimize my website for search engines to get a better rank in Google and other search engines whenever someone types a keyword in Google. At the moment my website resides on a free host, but I'll be going paid again in a few days. I currently run a legal gaming and emulation community and am using Mybb as my board software. So far I have done general things to optimize my website such as creating a sitemap, submitting my url to the Google search engine, using a meta tag/keyword mod for Mybb and an SEO mod for search engine friendly url's. I still feel there is a lot left to do to optimize my website for search engines in order to increase my page rank on Google and increase traffic to my website. Myself, I'm fairly inexperienced at being a webmaster so a lot of these things I have no clue how to do without some kind of guidance or help. I've just mastered administrating a Mybb forum properly and fixing errors/kinks, however for the other useful things I'm basically lost. I appreciate any help that I may receive, thank you. By the way, nice forum you have here. It'll definitely come in handy for me.

Thank you, I appreciate the link.
I apologize for the wall of text in my last post. Since I use noscript in Firefox, unless I allow the website to be added to my whitelist to run scripts on the webpage it'll mess with the format/layout of my posts when I go to submit them thus it'll come out as a wall of text.

I hope you don't dispense that advice without explaining what "SE friendly" is. There are a lot of factors you need to account for for search engine friendliness:
1. Descriptive non-spammy title
2. Keyword research
3. Header tags
4. Anchor Text
The list goes on and on....

Thats great advice - as apposed to writing a page of original and compelling content and giving it a completely useless and irrelevant title.
I'm sold

Simply just write quality unique content and write fior the visiors and not for search engine. Use formatting headings and empahasise important keywords. Easy does it.

I am in the same boat and want to understand what you mean here by non spammy title. I am looking for a good title for my new blog/project which is going to be intyeractive and quite humungous so getting a good title is important that is Seo friendly too. I would appreciate an analysis on this Thanks in advance.

Simple. Don't make your title "Blue widgets, widgets that are blue, royal blue widgets, widgets, cool widgets, etc."
Make it something like "Blue widgets - MyWebsiteName"

The onpage (title, meta, description, keywords, etc) side of it is just one factor. The offpage (backlinks with anchor texts) that you build will also have a big say - as they help get your site get a better placement in the SERPs. Remember also to keep them targeted as these backlinks are also potential sources of direct traffic overtime.

Don't forget about your visitors too .
Also, I wouldn't use long blocks of single-paragraph text (from a user standpoint), it makes things difficult to read.

I need an SEO Guru's help

Sorry I am replying so late but I have taken all of your suggestions and read the article link above in the reply to my first post.
I've been working on adding more content to both my main page and forum, I have also made site maps, created content according to my websites title, meta description etc....
I've tried improving the website to be more user friendly, am actively improving it all the time and accepting suggestions and feedback from other staff and members.
Yet my website is failing to generate any significant traffic, just a few guests here and there a member registering but not posting once in a great while, search bots every now and then.
I've been on paid hosting for about two months, site loads fairly quickly, layout is nice. I have meta tags/keywords/description implemented into my website.
I was wondering if an SEO guru can take a look at my website, analyze it and provide useful feedback to improve and optimize my website better.
Thank You.
Website is http://www.xtemu.com if I haven't added it to my signature yet.

Most importantly are is quality content and strong links. However, the other stuff is all critical to success as well.
