I just uploaded a Google created sitemap to my root directory, and I have a simple question... I think. I have a phpBB message board thru Forumotion.com, which I have a link to on my site. I noticed that the forum doesn't show up on the sitemap, and I am wondering if I should include it, even though it is an external site on a separate server?

Okay,

given that it is a sitemap, why would pages that are not part of the same physical site be in it??

I don't know, you would have to ask the Google Sitemap widget. The forum is not on my server, it is hosted on a separate server, which is the only reason I can think of for them over looking it. I'm new to the sitemap/google seo thing, so that is why I asked. In the old days, it was a different ball game.

A XML sitemap is absolutely nothing to do with SEO.

I guess you misunderstood.

A sitemap relates to a site. NOT to external items that are not on the same hostname. That would be a different site.

I guess I did misunderstand you, my mistake.

However, as for the XML not having anything to do with SEO, I thought it was there to help them know what to crawl and what to include/exclude? Is that not their purpose?

The purpose of a sitemap is to give the SEs an alternative path into sites that are very large and / or difficult to crawl.

If your site is being crawled, a sitemap is of absolutely no use at all.
