I am trying to get my site off the ground. I know it takes a while and my site has only been up for little over a month. I want it to work out so I figured I would ask some questions.

Now if I am correct the way you get top spots in the search engines is to get backlinks. And the way you get top spots in the keywords you have to have backlinks with tags.

Lets say I want to target "cows" as a keyword.

I would ask for a link exchange from someone and instead of just asking for

myurl.com I would want it to be like

myurl.com "Cows are fun" or something like that? How would I do a swap and get the keyword I want in and not just call the link "cows"? My main goal would not be to actually get traffic but to get google to see it but traffic would be nice too and "cows" for a link does not stand out.

Whats the html code to name a link with the tags? I cant find it on this forum.

Any other tips I need in order to get some spots on search phrases?
How long should it take?

How do I find out how many times a phrase is searched a month so I can tell if its worth targeting?

Thanks that answers some but not all my questions.

What about anchor text in links? What am I supposed to do? Does everything in the anchor text of a link turn into a keyword booster?

I think you should make a list of priorities.

Shouldn't traffic be a higher priority than serp?

Well I thought the main goal for link exchanges was to get links to your site for search engines which turn into traffic? I said I would want traffic.

The flaw with this is doing work for links where the effect is indirect and in someone else's hands.

For example, a change in search algorithms could cause all your hard earned traffic to disappear.

If you use links with the intent of direct traffic, you are less dependent on a search engine for your traffic. By, being distributed, your traffic will more likely be stable and more resistant to competition.
The stability occurs because you get traffic from thousands of sites instead of a few search engines.

Keep in mind, you will still see tons of traffic from search engines. You will also be able to survive without it.

So how should I go about promoting my site? Ask other sites to place a ad on their site or use google adwords?

Place your keyword in your anchor text - read this http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/20...t-optimization
