It may have a detrimental effect if your directory is a paid directory, you may be penalize by Google instead. Also directory takes away your link juice with every outbound link. Unless of course you put them as no follow. But who would want to submit to a no follow directory?

I am a believer that no follow still passes value.

I would say don't do it for seo reasons. If you want to have a directory, don't use one of those scripts and don't have open submissions, simply create a small list with a few categories of links that you think would actually be helpful on your topic.

Ahhhhh. Just what the world needs. Another directory! Maybe you should add a pixel site, too?

Putting outbound links on your site won't help with your SEO in any way. It could hurt, if you link out to spammy sites. Putting extra content on your site won't help, if each site submits with the same 250 character blurb they used on the last 250 directories they paid a kid in Malasia $1.00 to submit them to. Can you say massively duplicate, on a small scale?

I can't imagine many people will want to trade a "content link" for a directory link, not that link trading is particularly useful.

Giving your users more ways to leave your site, especially to potential competitors, won't do anything (you'd want) for your conversions.

Adding a directory might make your site more popular, because people are always looking for free directories, but doing that alone won't increase your rankings.
