It won't do anything for SEO AT ALL. Anything done outside your own site is promotion and marketing

It might well get you banned from the various places you are spamming at however.

It might get you backlinks, but as chrishirst said, it won't do you good.
Though I don't get what s Google's problem if you promote your site, there are millions of sites out there why can't I promote mine?

Thsts not the best way to think about it, you post on other peoples bloggs to get yourself noticed, if you make good posts on other peoples blogs, you can gain partners that might well open other avenues for you !

Blog commenting is a good way to gain 1 way link; provided that it was done PROPERLY and not SPAMMY.

You can, within reason, but it very much depends on how you go about it. Spamming blogs to promote one's site is an obvious no no. So would robbing a bank naked with your URL painted across your back be. On the other hand, if you want to advertise, that's a legitimate form of promotion.

I would call is Search Engine Marketing and Not SEO, but whatever you call it, it is very effective. Blogging on related sites that allow "Do Follow Comments" is very useful when you add to the conversation.

What is more important than the link is that it provides you with continuing education in your field. I find new resources almost daily.

Yes, it will.

As long as you're posting manually and on-topic, to dofollow blogs, you will be helping your performance in the search engines.

It's basic link building.

I'm very inclined to agree with you, or, more accurately, with this line of reasoning. But in this very particular instance, it seems like do follow is a way for people to get their blogs noticed, a gimmick. It's not impossible for a do follow blog to have lots of very good info - but from everything I've seen, most of the blogs that do, leave the rel="nofollow" in their blog template.

I have had a lot of success posting comments on bridge overpasses and bathrooms walls. Use a $.99 can of spray paint and draw(post) your website name on the overpass or wall. Use 2 foot font size for best results. This will increase traffic but not effect google or create backlinks. Blog commenting will increase backlinks and help you crush google in the SERP.

One thing that I didn't see above is looking at the quality of the site you are sticking your link on. I ignore PR for the most part, but how many pages does google have cashed for the site, be it a forum, blog, or just some site. Do a search for the keywords on pages on the site relevant to your site. How do they rank? If they are down in the mud, walk away. Sticking your link on a site G doesn't like will likely hurt you. Forum links are usually signature links and are not in context, hence little value. A good in context link on a blog that G likes with a follow could do you some good.

If you are posting a comment on high traffic site then you can derive traffic for your site.

I could argue that there's still optimization involved as far as anchor text is concerned.

I can get ranked well in Google by leaving different variations of my key-phrases in different anchor text. While it's true that you can't optimize a site that you have no control over, you can certainly optimize your content and links that appear on it.

Posting useful comments on relevant blogs will help if the blog is do follow. It seems that a new trend is starting where bloggers are making their blogs do follow and people are starting do follow blog directories. There are'nt very many blogs in the directories yet.
Now let's hope Google won't start treating blogs like link farms.

Post your comment on dofollow blogs and in a genuine way not like a spammer. I am not sure it will help or not? If you start posting like spammer then lots of people will ban your ip address.

I believe that posting comments on blog entries or forums or whatever generally gets you a lot more traffic for your site. It does get you backlinks, but increasing rankings in SEs that I haven't proven while doing such for our site. If you're posting comments make sure that the words come out naturally, don't post just keywords. Contribute to the topic at hand and post sensible, helpful comments.
