Wordtracker and Keyword Discovery, but I've found them both to be unreliable and have gone back to the very vague Google bars.

Yes, yourself is the answer... Stop before you become addicted to Keyword Tools. Try doing some research and start by visiting 20 competitor sites and read everything. Take notes and check the Meta Tags. It's what is called research but you will be far ahead of those using software and Google's AdWords.

The greatest part of research is that you will pick up regional variations in language that will be missed using these tools.

Umm... looking at competitor sites won't tell me what people are searching for on search engines.

By "Keyphrase tool" I mean that I'm looking for something that will tell me something like the following:

"Software Devleopmeint" - 200,000 searches in June
"Website Development" - 100,000 searches in June
"Website Design" - 500,000 searches in June
"Web Design" - 1,000,000 searches in June

etc.

This will help me decide what key phrases I want to target.

I frankly don't care what my competitors are doing.

Check Google's keyword tool - it'll give you that info and it now gives exact counts

I use Wordtracker and my own research. Look at competitiors sites, see what keywords they use in there titles, keywords etc, see what back-links they have in terms of keywords.

I think trying to find keywords can actually become obsessive. I think we should try and find 'good' keywords, but remmeber search engines arent all the traffic.

Kind regards
Neil

Yes, you are your own best tool... If you use a keyword tool you will get the same results as everyone else. Try doing competitive research... That's where you gain the real advantage.

Use keyword discovery and google suggestion tools. Google keyword suggestion tools now display the result of terms searched how many times.

I use google adwords keyword selector tool other than keyword county and wordracker free edition. Keyword County is a Paid Tool. but is very useful for adsense related keywords.

Run an AdWords campaign around keyphrases. You can then look at your stats and cpc in adwords to see which keywords G likes the best.

G says that the AdWords and SERPS databases aren't related. I don't believe them. I think the cleaver use of AdWords can help you optimize for natural SERPS.

I primarily market through adwords, but try to stay on top of SERPS SEO. I certainly can say that standard natural SERPS SEO when applied right works for AdWords. I've been doing it for a number of years.

I have not done the inverse, which is what I suggested in my prior post other than some test pages.

I have not done any test pages lately, and G's activities are always fluid.

So take it as a reasonable, but not guaranteed strategy. At least the source of the information is G though. WordTracker doesn't get their info from Google.

if you use 5 different keyword tools, they will give you 5 different results. I usually use the tools I mentioned in my first post and make an average if the keyword is competitive. If not, I stick to Google's tools.

I usually read the whole content first page by page and generate my own keywords and then that's the time that I will check those on SEs how competitive those keywords are, how many websites has keywords like mine.. Then proceed to google adwords keyword tool to see if lots of people are searching for that kind of keyword.
