I am new to SEO, don't know any think about this..

what is the different between www and non www? and which is best?

I think providing your website always forwards to one or the other.. and you only market links with the one it forwards to.. it shouldnt a difference

Yeah, as long as you choose one and stick to it, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference.

The same can be said for file endings.

http://mysite.com
http://www.mysite.com/
http://www.mysite.com/index.php

If you have links pointing to all three versions, you will effectively have three versions of the same page listed in Google. And no, that's not a good thing. It'll dilute your overall link value.

I'd go as far as performing a Mod Rewrite to force all links to redirect to the one page.

www is a subdomain. That's all. That's the only difference.

For seo, neither is better but as they say, make sure only one really exists and then 301 direct the other to the one that exists. I made the mistake of every one of my websites having duplicate content on both the www and the non www. Now I am in the process of converting them over.

http://www.domain.com/ - www version of your domain
http://domain.com/ - non www version of your domain

If you have both you would caught into page duplication(Different URLs with same content). To solve this u need to either redirect www to non www or non www to www with permanent 301 redirection. There is no such thing that Search Engine like www or non www. to have better look, always better to give www version to users and searchengines.
