True, not just for google (G) but also for the consumer's (C) mind. That's the ultimate victory. A "me too" site gets lower G rankings and C forgets about you because C already has another site in mind for whatever it is you're selling. Your site isn't going to just come along and bump that site out of G's ranking or C's head. Better to plant a flag on a mountain that hasn't been climbed than to try and dethrone others who are fortified at the summit.
The challenge, though, is actually twofold. First, you've got to create a site that's new and different. Something unique but also useful. Which is a daunting task, but fun.
Second, and this is the real kicker, you've got to make G and C aware of your unique creation. It becomes a new category in G and C's mind and you've planted your flag at the top of it. But this takes time. A lot of it. Because, if it truly is unique, no one is looking for it. By definition then, you actually have optimized for a phrase like "dljk al eihjegt alkdlfg eoghogh alelel lhegtlheg" until that awareness is built.
The final question becomes "How do you build that awareness?"
