I just started a new site. Since then, I've been reading as much as I can about generating traffic, but I'm really unsure about what advice actually works and what's a scam or just a plain old waste of my time.

For those of you who've had success driving unpaid traffic to your site, how did you do it? Please also let me know any associated costs, time involved, efficacy, etc.

That's the point; I want to build traffic reliably, not use some scam.

Your question isn't really one that can be answered in a single thread. There also isn't a one size fits all approach.

There are lots of different ways to bring traffic to your site. You'll either have to make an investment of money or time or both. How much depends on your market and the competition within the market.

Some basic ideas for further research:

Keywords Research - figure out the words real people actually use when looking for what you have to offer. Understand how competitive those terms are so you can decide which are the best for you to use short term and long term.

Build a site that can be easily crawled by search engines.

Create content that people want. Content that people want to read and interact with and content that people want to link to.

Build relationships with people in and out of your industry.

Figure out who your potential customers are, what they would specifically want from you, and where they spend their time. Make sure your product offers what your customers want and then get your message out where they spend their time.

I think commenting blog comments work beter than anything. Try to post a few comments per day and see if your rank improves in two months.

you could write articles or press release and then submit those. They allow you to put some links.
Maybe try integrating a blog onto your website. Nothing better to create fresh content and links for very little effort. Plus, you might LEARN something.

Alot of blog comment sections are setup with the "no-follow" attribute for links so this really wouldn't help you at all in the search engines.

Not to say this is a bad idea; it can drive traffic and some blog comments don't have no-follow. just check before you spend the next couple months posting in other people blogs.

It really does depend on the site.

For some, I'll draw up extensive link building campaigns. For others, like my blog, just posting in relevant forums is a good way of driving traffic. In fact, I prefer that kind of traffic to Google traffic.

SEO requires Trial-and-Error methods. Why do you think other people say or claim that a particular method is effective? It is becuase they TRY it. If is bring good things to website without getting penalize or ban, then its effective.

Concentrate on the contents and let it be unique and original. Write contents for the human visitors and not for bots. SEO for the google and getting targeted visitors will be the key to success of any website...

Participating in a big crowd relevant to your niche like forums..blogs and etc..then quality of content of your site will play the role...you can use it as a resource for the topic but be sure it has something to offer to the crowd and will going to contribute to the discussion...think of contributing to the discussion not to the purpose of getting clicks..cause it will come naturally...

The right answer to get quality backlinks is to make quality content. If you spend an hour a day meeting others' needs with your content that will be time better spent than if you made backlinks to lame content.

Consider the following when building backlinks:
1. It should help you in your SEO
2. It should attract direct targeted visitor to your site overtime

That's how I consider a link to be valuable and worthwhile building.
