Does anyone know why this url (below) is consistently ranking #1 (sometimes #2) in Google for one of my keywords. It's not even a site, it has no backlinks, and the content is, well..content. I don't get it.

It depends on the keywords you've used.. Maybe that article has lot of visitors and not all backlinks are visible, sometimes they don't appear when you checked it you'll just know by their PR.

Because that page is more "important" than any other page to the Google algo.

Search engines don't list sites, they list pages. It will have SOME backlinks even though you can't find them, and they will be "quality" (by google standards) links.

Appearing certain web sites on the certain pages on the SE depends on the several factors and I think that it is google only know. We can only guess on it. And if your guess is very close to the true you will get good ranking

Yes, duh, I should have mentioned the keyword, it's "refinance debt".

I realize too, that some of you may be getting a different ranking on it depending on your geographic location.

David- Thanks for cheking on the backlinks. It looks like it has only 5 backlinks. 4 look low ranking and 1 is a deadlink.

Chris- I don't think the content is anything fabulous. So, given all of this, why is it more important to google?

Some sites hold a lot of weight with Google. And Ezine Articles is definitely one of them. Search engines eat content up there like candy! That's why even if you do have a website, it would be wise to write an article on Ezine Articles and link it back to your main website. This will add a quality back link from the well respected Ezine Articles site to yours - and not to mention the countless other backlinks that you can generate if others decide to reprint your article on their websites also!

In line with chrishurst thought - if you checked for backlinks using Google you'll likely find zippo. Google is extremely picky about what links they consider worth acknowledging. One of our oldest sites has over 10,000 backlinks and Google lists about 100 of these. By the ay this doesn't mean Google doesn't notice the links, it just doesn't list them
