Hi,
I want to create some blogs, but I can't find how to choose a good topic for them with minimum of competitors , and I'm asking if it's possible to get a good traffic if I choose a topic not very used in the web But have a few searches in google and other SE ?

Can I choose a topic with for example only 200 searches per day, and be in the 2 first pages of google, or a topic of more than 6,025 searches like "php" but be in the page 408 will be better ? !

And how to check the number of searches of a keywords in google, I know 3 tools that give different results:
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-too...book/index.php
http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/...tion-tool.html

What do you think is the best, gives the right results ?

The first thing you need to consider is: start a blog on something you are passionate about, not based on the amount of searches. You will need to provide good unique content in order to attract people AND make them come back.

As for the keyword, I would trust the G tool the most to check Google' s searches but no tool can be trusted 100%.

In keyword research, compare the number of searches per month or day to the total number of competitors in a given keywords.

Thats right, the way I do it is to find out the monthly searches on a keyword (using googles keyword tool) and find out the number of people DIRECTLY competing for the keyword (meaning people who have links back to their site using the keyword as the anchor text) by searching on Google for: allinanchor:yourkeyword

The formula then is Monthly Searches (M) squared divided by Direct Competion (D), or: M^2/D

This gives a value called the Keyword Oppurtunity Index, and allows you to compare the effectiveness of different keywords

i totally agree with you on this. for a blog to be successful you must love the niche that you choose so that you can update your blog with a nice and unique content.

The Keyword Opportunity Index is really interesting, can you explain what to do after finding out the values.

List all the possible keywords that you want to use or better yet try using keywordspy so it will be easier for you to check your chosen keywords.

Blogging is not just about getting traffic and be in google's 1st page.. It's hard to write and get a topic that you're not familiar with. Of course from time to time you'll add new/fresh content on your blog.

I use adwords on searching for keywords and it's not hard to be in 408 page on SERPs if it only has 6,000+ searches.

Not all traffic brings conversion, especially when your marketing something. First thing first, you choose a topic that interest you. Analyze the kw searches and competitors. It must have more searches but must have low competition. You can use Google Adwords to analyze your kw. Good luck!

Do you know that sounds remarkably IDENTICAL to the formula for KEI

And surprise surprise http://www.wordtracker.com/database_help/keihelp.html

I am aware of this, and I certainly wasn't trying to pass it off as my own if thats what you think - in fact I'll tell you my source, it was SEO Expert David Viney who enlightened me on KOI

As for it being 'identical', well clearly it isn't, as it uses a different value than the raw competition. I believe that this method is more effective as it only takes into account people who are actively (or I suppose accidentally) optimizing for that particular keyword

Thanks to all you nice forum members as I have got lots of new ideas here. For good keywords I always look at google Adword tool and also see the keywords of competitor sites.
