Thats right, the way I do it is to find out the monthly searches on a keyword (using googles keyword tool) and find out the number of people DIRECTLY competing for the keyword (meaning people who have links back to their site using the keyword as the anchor text) by searching on Google for: allinanchor: yourkeyword
The formula then is Monthly Searches (M) squared divided by Direct Competion (D), or: M^2/D
This gives a value called the Keyword Oppurtunity Index, and allows you to compare the effectiveness of different keywords
