Is it easier/faster to get a new site indexed and showing up prominently in search results if it is local? For instance, if I was selling widgets, instead of optimizing one single site for national exposure, wouldn't it be easier and more effective if I had many sites like houstonwidgets.com, atlantawidgets.com, etc;??? And than they could all link to widgets.com.

Also, as far as link building is concerned, has anyone ever checked their high ranking competitors links and than set out to submit to the same exact ones?

I appreciate any input, thanks.

Local search is always easier than general search..

But, if you are planning to actually market nationwide then you would need a website for each area or region, be able to fill each website with it's own unique content, and develop marketing plans for each website..
Seems to me that if you have to do that much work you may as well focus on one great website..

Your focus on targeting locally is a little misplaced but a great idea when implemented correctly. What you are talking about is know as Geo-targeting.

Sometimes it's much simpler to get some stable traffic for a local domain, using promotions only for some local area, for example atlantawidgets.com.
This way you can avoid rich keyword competitors.

It will generally be easier to compete locally for the simple reason that there will be less competition. I offer web design. So do a lot of other people. If I try to compete for web design boulder colorado there are still many others offering web design here, but not quite as many as offering web design in the US or the world.

Many people have tried the strategy you suggested, but I think it's better to keep everything one one domain and then target each section of your site toward the local market. With everything on different domains a link into houstonwidgets.com doesn't really help atlantawidgets.com so much. However a link into widgets.com/houston would help a page on widgets.com/atlanta. I'm oversimplifying things a little.

Of course you shouldn't set up those pages on either one domain or many using the same content. If the only thing that differs is the words houston and atlanta you're probably not going to be helping yourself much whether the pages are on the same of different domains.

Of course local search will rank you fast compare to general search. Its general trend. You will get rank well fast in local search. For example if your site extension is .co.za than your site naturally come fast on good position at www.google.za.

yes it is much easy to target local niche rather than international specially if you include the local name into the domain.
