My site is less than a year old, and I've been working on building up my link exchange with other sites manually. I have a couple questions that I'm sure some of the more experienced people here can answer.

1. How can you verify that the page your link will be placed upon is being seen by spiders? I've seen many sites with good Google PR, except for their links pages, which will have either non, or the PR button is just greyed out.

2. Does anyone have an opinion, or experiences concerning linking with sites more relative to your own niche versus completely off topic, such as directories and eCommerce sites 180 degrees apart from your own?

Both are good reads, but I am unsure how they answer my questions. Maybe I need to explain a bit more about what I am asking.

I've seen a lot of talk in the forums about how important backlinking is, thru a variety of sources, one of them being link exchanges with other sites. I've attempted in the past to use a link exchange website, and had very mixed results. While most sites seem to be legit, most seemed to be link farms. A few of the link exchange offers I got seemed fishy, so I dug a bit further. When visiting these sites, the page or pages that they were offering to list other sites were inaccessible thru the site as either subpages or even listed in a sitemap. This lead me to believe that they were trying to pull a fast one, and get themselves one way links to themselves using this link exchange service.

This is also why I ask about the PR of reciprical link pages. I'm unsure what the difference is between a PR of zero, and a PR of nothing(grey bar). Does one of these denote that the page is not spidered, and they are offering an exchange which will only be one way?

Not all links are created equally in the search engines eyes.

1. Reciprocal links are least effective
2. 3-Way link exchanges are a little more effective
3. Pure one-way backlinks are the most effective

It is also important to link to relevant content. You need to also deep link your site and build backlinks to your inner pages and have them all connected to pass along the PR. Article marketing, social bookmarking and directory submissions are all methods you can use for good quality one way backlinks. Don't waste your time with reciprocal linking, it does not work as well as it used to.

Build a network of websites that connect to each other but don't link them together and have all of them link to your main website and then build backlinks to each of these websites individually. This is a very powerful and effective backlink method.

Before going to link exchange You remember some point like
Site should have good PR.
site shows relative link which you want to submitted.
site do not have more than 10 or 15 links.

These point help you to increasing the PR of your site.

I would advise you not to concentrate too much on "building links". Links should come organically. All this "link exchange" is a true waste of time.

what would be the best way to grow it organically..kinda seems like a catch-22. the only way people will hear of your site is if you advertise it... and how else to advertise it than by link building?

Precisely!
And links are exactly that. Advertising! NOT Optimising.

Link exchanging with all and sundry is a futile exercise. Your link gets dumped on some little backwater of a page that never sees light of day.
If you are going to swap links with other pages, do so with site owners who aren't scared to actually show their visitors places they would recommend.

if you want to know if your link is crawled by search engine spider you better check the backlink of your website by typing link:www.sitename.com to search engine search bar or try to use backlink checker tools like http://www.backlinkwatch.com
and with regard to your question about link building it is much better if you get backlinks from related niche rather than a backlink from completely off topic but a back link from a completely offtopic also help but no as much as the back link from related niche.

Link exchange rules are very simple:

1) LE with related sites.
2) LE with good-neighbor sites (not all related sites are good neighbor site).

Link building is important. Link exchange is not a waste of time as it can also help your site ranking.

Have you considered a "Ring Surf" (A web site linking system that gathers like-minded content sites together into searchable links (Display/Banners) off of each other. I use some at different pages of web sites I work with.
Signing a lot of "Guestbooks" gets you several linkings after a while.
Submitting your site(s) to various search engines seems to have helped me, also.
Good Luck! Maybe after another year, you'll have greater 'internet presence'.
