I was wondering about the way stopwords work in terms of researching keywords and keyphrases

One useful piece of information to have when researching keywords is the search volume. Admittedly it isn't usually the most accurate results that you recieve but it gives a rough idea of what you are looking at.

My question is, if you are looking at a keyphrase (lets say for example "build a website") is that exactly the same as the keyphrase "build website" (because most search engines will not run the "a") or is it a different keyphrase?

I hope that made some sort of sense, I know what I mean in my head but I'm finding it a little difficult to articulate

I think that "build website" is really effective key phrase. I think key phrase should be short. Imagine that you add adjective well-designed. I think it has to be 2 word maximum without any prepositions.
It's good that you noticed it.

It's a different keyphrase (you can search for the "a" with quotes around your search I believe).

The same thing with "build website"
and "website build"

That will yield two different sets of results.

Pod.

or me it is much important to target a single searchable keyword but if the site is new try seattle first with key phrases before targeting single key phrases.

Would YOU search for "build website" instead of "build a website"

Real people are the ones doing the searching.

I see what your're saying, but that was only really an example (albeit a bad one )

But thanks for the link anyway, a good thread and a forum that I've never heard of before - I might join up

You should go with search engines related to search term and see there which keywords has most searches or most pages are index.
