Id like to make a html sitemap for my site, to help users if they cant find something but also to help bots browse my site.

What is the best method for making a sitemap? What are good resources for doing so?

Does this type of sitemap have any impact on SEO?

Use Xenu's Link Sleuth. Convert the site report link list into a sitemap.

Not SEO specially, but it is a good way to bring "deep" links closer to the surface.

You can also use XML-Sitemaps

And you can also apply an 'importance' value to specific pages

I actually stumpled accross XML - Sitemaps last night, but i wasnt too hapy with the layout of the html map generated by them. Alot of links are on it multiple times and they are all centered without any spaceing or formating.

Also whats the importance value you speak of, and how do you set it?

The <priority> tag is used in XML sitemaps to assign the importance of individual pages within the website

You can give them a value of: 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 or 1.0

The whole thing doesn't have a huge amount of weight in SEO terms but can help a bot out a little and gives you just that little bit more control over the project

If you are looking for productivity out of your Sitemap, then just do what Angelsanto said and use XML-Sitemaps.com. Seriously, it gives you the sitemap you need in and the one that Google wants to see. And that's really the best reason to have a sitemap.
