Hey, the site that I'm optimizing at the moment can be accessed from both of the URL's in the title

I've been hearing that its not as good for SEO to have it that way. In fact I read something about setting up a 301 redirect from one to the other to solve the problem

Is there any truth to this?

Many thanks

Danny

Having both return a 200 response can cause some problems, eventually the SEs do figure it out and filter out one. So it makes sense to pick the one YOU want from the outset and redirect the other to it.

OK, thanks. Is there any difference between the two? Is there one you should pick over the other?

there is no difference but I would go with the www. version as it is the "standard" format.
It won't change anything in terms of SEO so it's up to you

After setting the 301 redirect you could also set preferred domain in google webmaster tools.

As propress said, be sure to set it in the Google webmaster tools... and ideally you should do the redirect in your httpd.conf or, if you don't have access, in a site-wide .htaccess file.

Yes it causes website duplication. So 301 redirection has to be done to avoid such problems.

Below is the code you can use to do this via the .htaccess file, make sure to put it in the root directory .htaccess file.

Code:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^matrixitcomputers\.co.uk$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.matrixitcomputers.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L]

Nope they are exactly the same for SEO. What you do to one, happens to the other at precisely the same instant.

However they are different URIs for search engines!
